Newcastle United fans find themselves in a very similar situation to rivals Manchester United when it comes to stadiums.

Both Premier League clubs have recently welcomed new owners, with PIF taking over Newcastle in 2021 and Sir Jim Ratcliffe completing a minority takeover in Manchester late last year.

A hot topic around Newcastle since the takeover has been the future of St James’ Park with the owners facing a decision to either build a new stadium or refurbish.

PIF initially insisted that expanding St James’ Park is their preferred choice, but talks are ongoing about building a new 60,000-capacity venue.

Newcastle have been hamstrung by the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules in recent seasons and a new stadium would generate extra income to help navigate the regulations.

Newcastle fans have their say about St James’ Park future

Before moving forward with their stadium decision, club chiefs held crunch talks with the fan advisory board.

A feasibility study was carried out to assess the logistics of expanding St James’ Park to a capacity of 60,000 or more, and a decision is expected in 2025.

Alan Shearer has given his verdict on leaving St James’ Park as the club close in on a final decision.

The Daily Mail‘s Craig Hope recently ran a poll among Newcastle fans, with 6,000 voters having their say on what should happen with St James’ Park.

He concluded that Newcastle fans are now “60/40” in favour of building a new stadium either on the same site or at Leazes Park.

38 percent of voters said they had changed their mind from initially wanting to stay at St James’ to now wanting a new stadium built.

Newcastle fans are in agreement with Man United supporters

PSR has caused a race for revenue among Premier League clubs, with many top-flight sides now considering – or currently building – new stadiums.

Newcastle and Manchester United are in similar situations as they decide to stay and refurbish or build a new state-of-the-art venue.

Manchester United published results of a fan survey they conducted and 52 percent of their supporters are in favour of building a new stadium.

There are a lot of parallels with Newcastle supporters as they pivot to wanting a new stadium built under PIF.
