Newcastle United are set for an exciting future.

While this season has been something of a struggle, there are a number of mitigating factors for Newcastle to consider.

Indeed, Eddie Howe is believed to be pointing towards fitness and recruitment issues behind the scenes for reasons for the current malaise. Throw in maddeningly difficult cup draws, FFP frustrations and Sandro Tonali’s ban from football and it all makes for rather difficult reading.

Still, PIF have big plans for the club. A large summer rebuild has been touted and reports have claimed the owners have big plans to keep bringing money into the club to help on the FFP front.

St James’ Park could also be in line for an upgrade.

Newcastle news: New stadium plans

The move to a new stadium has been touted and, according to the Daily Telegraph, two possible sites could work.

The first could see the club move to the banks of the River Tyne on the site of the current Metro Radio Arena.

However, if it is proven to be feasible to remain at St James’, that is the direction the club will go down. Senior sources suggest the preference is to stay at their iconic home but an expansion is littered with “difficult choices” because Grand One listed buildings are behind the East Stand.

Were they to stay at St James’, the report claims a capacity of 60-70,000 could be on the cards.

Newcastle new stadium: A move would be painful

Clearly, there are obstacles to overcome in regard to potentially expanding St James’. It does not look an easy process.

It is, however, promising to hear that is the preference. Indeed, it is difficult to imagine a Newcastle without St James’ and vice-versa.

In a perfect world, the current home would be improved. Whether that is feasible or not remains to be seen.
