Newcastle United are still deliberating over expansion plans at St James’ Park after carrying out a feasibility study.

Stadium development seems to be the talk of football at the moment and Newcastle United are determined to not be left behind.

Manchester United are weighing up a new stadium build, Everton are close to moving into their new ground and Leeds United have just announced Elland Road expansion plans.

It is very much a topic that has been heavily discussed at Newcastle United too since the PiF takeover in 2021. The Magpies recently received the results from a feasibility study that assessed the logistics of an expansion to St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s owners prefer to expand St James’ Park rather than build a new stadium, although that is also an option that has been considered.

St James’ Park has fallen behind

St James’ Park was last expanded in 1998, taking it to a total capacity of 52,000.

At the time, it ranked as the second-biggest club stadium in England, only behind Manchester United’s Old Trafford.

However, St James’ Park has now tumbled down to seventh in that list and could drop to eighth when Leeds move forward with their 53,000-seater expansion.

Newcastle have no problems selling out St James’ Park every week, and would easily fill a 60,000-capacity stadium too.

It appears that is the plan at Newcastle, but first, the club is set to hold a crunch meeting.

Newcastle set for stadium talks with fan board

According to Shields Gazette, Newcastle are set to hold a meeting with the nine members of Newcastle’s Fan Advisory Board on Monday.

It is viewed as the next step in the process, with the club eager to hear from the fans and see their point of view before making an official decision on whether to expand St James’ Park to a capacity of 60,000 – or more.

The report adds that any construction work to expand St James’ Park will be subject to the club extending its current leasehold with Newcastle City Council, which expires in 2097.

It also suggests an official announcement around the stadium plans could be made after the fan advisory board meeting on Monday.
