Newcastle United may be on the lookout for a Callum Wilson replacement this summer.
It has been rumoured that the Magpies are going to look to sign another forward, while Callum Wilson‘s time on Tyneside could be up.
A January transfer did not materialise, but all roads appear to lead towards him leaving at the end of the season. It has been reported that a departure is likely.
But that will not happen unless Newcastle get a replacement. They will need to sign someone who is just as deadly in front of goal, all the while being much more durable.
One player who has been linked with a move to St James’ Park is Ivan Toney. He looks likely to leave Brentford this summer, while you could argue he has unfinished business at Newcastle.
And former England goalkeeper David James believes that Toney could be an ideal candidate to replace Wilson.
David James tips Ivan Toney to replace Callum Wilson at Newcastle
David James has been speaking to GGRecon, and was asked where he thinks Toney could go this summer.
“Given Callum Wilson’s injury record this season, and I hope he can get himself fit to be in the conversation to go to Euro 2024 in the summer, but if there’s an ongoing issue for him there, then I think there’s a natural fit for Ivan Toney at Newcastle when you consider the way that Eddie Howe likes his side to play,” he said.

Toney would be a perfect signing for Newcastle
Swapping out Wilson for Toney would be a step in the right direction for Newcastle. The 27-year-old has really established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading strikers, and would be a ‘natural fit’ as James says.
He is incredibly physical, just like Wilson. He would be a contrast to Alexander Isak, who is always going to be the Magpies’ main man through the middle.
That is the only concern when it comes to replacing Wilson. Whoever arrives will know that they are going to be second choice, which might make it tricky to tempt someone like Toney to make the move.
But right now Newcastle have two top level goalscorers, and that would still be the case next season if Wilson leaves and is replaced by Toney.
And, as we say, he does have unfinished business in black and white…
