Morgan Rogers says Newcastle United have the fastest player in the England squad… but Ollie Watkins disagrees

The England squad is full of Newcastle United players nowadays.

There were three Newcastle United players in the most recent Three Lions camp, with Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento making their international debuts.

They joined Anthony Gordon, who is establishing himself as an England regular after a disappointing Euro 2024. Gordon scored his first England goal during the recent win over Ireland, and will hope it is the first of many for his country. However, Gordon has refused to give the assist to Livramento following his ‘awful’ cross.

Given his pace, it was staggering that Gordon did not play more for England at the Euros. The Three Lions needed speed and width, yet Gareth Southgate ignored the one player who provides exactly that.

Morgan Rogers says Anthony Gordon is England’s fastest

And when it comes to speed, Aston Villa attacker Morgan Rogers actually thinks that Anthony Gordon is England’s fastest player.

On a video for ITV Sport’s YouTube channel, Rogers played a game of ‘guess who’ with Villa and England teammate Ollie Watkins.

During the video, Watkins provided one clue that Rogers was adamant was for Anthony Gordon.

Watkins: “He’s the fastest man on the planet. No, not on the planet. He’s the fastest man in the squad by a mile.”

Rogers: “Anthony Gordon?”

Watkins: “Nah.”

Rogers: “He’s not quicker than Anthony, whoever you’re on about.”

Instead, Watkins was talking about Kyle Walker.

Gordon was not Newcastle United’s fastest player earlier this season

It says a lot about how quick Gordon is that Rogers thinks he is faster than Kyle Walker.

However, Gordon was not even Newcastle’s fastest player earlier this season. That honour went to Harvey Barnes, who had clocked in at 34.7km per hour back in October.

But that was probably reflective of Gordon’s start to the season. He was initially struggling, before being asked to play up front where he had his back to goal a lot of the time.

While the numbers earlier this season said otherwise, most people will think that Gordon is Newcastle’s fastest player, especially if he really is faster than Kyle Walker.

Hopefully we see those two players compete in a race when Newcastle United next face Manchester City, with the two sides scheduled to meet at the Etihad Stadium on February 15th 2025.
