Manchester United could finally sell ‘brilliant’ star in January after claims Newcastle want to sign him

There are some names who continue to be linked with Newcastle United.

While Newcastle eventually decided on making Sandro Tonali their big summer signing, the Italian was far from the only midfielder touted as a target.

Now of course, the former AC Milan star is banned until August, reportedly making strengthening the middle of the park something of a priority for the club once more.

As such, the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Ruben Neves have been linked but perhaps there will be a chance to sign another star mentioned over the summer.

Newcastle transfer news: Man United could now sell Scott McTominay

Indeed, according to The Sun, Manchester United could now opt to sell Scott McTominay in January.

The Scotland international has enjoyed a decent season on an individual basis and has started six of his club’s Premier League games thus far.

Still, despite something of a rebirth as a first-team option, a reboot of the squad at Old Trafford could force him out.

It is claimed that despite keeping the 26-year-old only a few months ago, the Manchester giants may now look to cash in.

Scott McTominay to Newcastle: FFP problems could scupper deal (Opinion)

Having been linked with Newcastle for so long, it seems reasonable to assume the club might be keen should McTominay become available.

Reportedly liked by Eddie Howe, the midfielder has proven himself at Premier League level and provides a palpable goal threat for both club and country. Hailed as “brilliant” by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, McTominay certainly has his uses.

Still, signing him won’t be easy.

Man United reportedly value their academy graduate at around £50m and the idea of them lowering that price to help a rival in Newcastle strengthen seems somewhat unlikely.

With FFP issues continuing to linger too, that kind of valuation looks prohibitive as things stand.

If McTominay is to join Newcastle in January, there surely needs to be a drop in valuation from Man United.
