Midfielder Scott McTominay is now expected to remain at Manchester United until the end of transfer deadline day.
Scott McTominay has been linked with moves away from Old Trafford all summer. West Ham United (The Guardian) and Newcastle United both showed a keen interest.
However, as per The Telegraph transfer live blog (01/09/2023, 10:53), Manchester United have opted to keep McTominay at the club.
The Red Devils were certainly never overly keen to offload the 26-year-old. According to The Daily Star, they put a £50 million price tag on the player when Newcastle suggested they held an interest in the him. Eddie Howe is certainly a fan of McTominay, but the Magpies have been resolutely unwilling to meet Manchester United’s demands.

Newcastle to miss out on McTominay luxury
McTominay would have been a good fit at St James’ Park. His tenacity and work rate would have made him an ideal midfield partner for a figure such as Sandro Tonali, who also boasts excellent energy levels. However, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Joe Willock also all on the books at Newcastle, Howe already has plenty of quality options to choose from at the Tyneside club.
Signing McTominay would have been an unnecessary luxury for Newcastle. What’s more, the 41-cap Scotland international will have an important role to play for his current club this season.
Whilst he isn’t a regular starter under Erik ten Hag, there will likely be plenty of occasions when a player with the qualities that McTominay possesses will be called for at Manchester United. Even if Sofyan Amrabat does join the club, as journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated he is keen to do, then there will still be a place for McTominay.
Despite interest from Newcastle, and after over 200 appearances for the club he had been a part of since the age of five, there is still more to the McTominay story at Manchester United.
