Newcastle United were linked with signing Scott McTominay during the January transfer window, with Eddie Howe a big fan of the 26-year-old.
According to the Athletic, the Toon boss admires his ball-carrying ability, which was a reason why the Magpies tried to bring in the Manchester United midfielder during the January transfer window.
Newcastle spent most of the month searching for a centre-midfielder, with Jonjo Shelvey’s injury highlighting the limited options Howe has in that position.
There was interest in the likes of Moises Caicedo and Youri Tielemans, while there was also talk of McTominay arriving.
In the end, Newcastle got no one and Shelvey actually left the club permanently. It leaves the Magpies light in midfield for the rest of the season, with a replacement certain to arrive during the summer transfer window.

Scott McTominay could be on Eddie Howe’s radar again
It remains to be seen who Newcastle go for. That may depend on whether or not we finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.
A big money midfielder is surely going to come in, and it would not be a surprise if Newcastle reignite their interest in McTominay.
Man United did not want to let go of the Scotland international last month, despite the fact the Telegraph claimed that he actually wanted to move to St James’ Park.
Erik ten Hag denied McTominay the chance to play for Newcastle, but perhaps the opportunity could arise again in a few months. Newcastle will reportedly reevaluate their interest in him at the end of the season, which could be when Man United decide it is time to sell.
He would be far from a high profile addition at St James’ Park. Like the Gordon deal, it would raise a lot of eyebrows from Toon fans.
But Howe clearly sees something in McTominay, and thinks his ability to carry the ball could make him a good addition to his squad. The Toon boss already has some powerful dribblers in his midfield, with both Joe Willock and Joelinton excellent at driving with the ball up the pitch with pace and power.
Howe sees the same quality in McTominay, and it will be interesting to see if Newcastle make a fresh move in the summer after failing to sign him in the previous two transfer windows. Perhaps it will be third time lucky for Howe.
