Newcastle United have made their first move to sign an attacker during the January transfer window, as Callum Wilson continues to struggle with injury.

The Toon number nine is currently out of action, but could return before the end of the month when Newcastle take on Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round.

But his latest injury proves how desperate the Magpies are for another forward, as they simply cannot rely on the 31-year-old. At this moment in time, Newcastle have no backup for Alexander Isak, which is concerning given his own recent fitness record.

That is why Eddie Howe would like to add another attacker to his squad during the January transfer window, and it appears that the club have identified who they want to sign.

Newcastle launch Dominic Solanke enquiry

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United have made an enquiry about signing Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Eddie Howe is a big fan of the 26-year-old, and was the manager who brought him to Bournemouth from Liverpool for £19million back in 2019.

But while Howe admires Solanke, that does not mean he will get to work with him again.

Bournemouth reject Newcastle’s approach

The Telegraph add that the Cherries have turned down Newcastle’s approach, as they are adamant that he will not be leaving the Vitality Stadium during the January transfer window.

That is a shame, as Solanke would be a great signing for Newcastle. He is enjoying his best ever season in front of goal, scoring 12 times in the Premier League so far. That is more than he has ever managed in the top flight of English football.

Two of those goals came against Newcastle, netting a brace during a 2-0 win for Bournemouth back in November.

He proved on that day what a handful he can be, while Newcastle were stretched beyond belief and had no senior striker available.

The Magpies have not added to their squad since then, and have identified Solanke as someone who they want to bring in. However, it does not look like that will be possible.
