Newcastle United are in the market for a new striker and the one they have identified looks to be the exact opposite of Callum Wilson.
News emerge yesterday that Newcastle have been monitoring the situation of Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke who has been in really impressive form this season.
Taking a look at his injury record, the striker has missed just five of his last 103 games due to injury, something Wilson couldn’t imagine even in his wildest dreams.
Newcastle need a reliable striker
Wilson is a brilliant goalscorer and someone who, when fully fit, can grab you 20 goals in the Premier League a season, he even came very close to it last year when he netted 18 for Newcastle.
But that’s just the problem, he can’t stay fit for a full season – he’s currently out injured and not expected back until the end of January, potentially missing key games against Manchester City and Aston Villa.
When looking at the two player’s injury record in the last three years, it’s very clear who is the more dependable attacker.
During the 2021/21 season alone Wilson had missed 20 games in the league because of injuries to his calf and his hamstring while Solanke played all 46 games in their Championship season, playing 90 minutes in 38 of those.

Solanke could be Newcastle’s ideal replacement for Wilson
The attacking duo will know each other well having spent 18 months together at Bournemouth before Wilson made the £20m move to Tyneside in 2020.
Should Newcastle make a bid for Solanke in January or even in the summer then he would at least have someone to help him settle down and get to know the squad.
However, it may be that Newcastle view Solanke as the perfect striker to replace Wilson altogether as they look to move to a more reliable goalscorer to take them to the next level.
Having scored 12 goals in the 19 appearances in the league this season already and proving to be a brilliant all-round forward, there’s every reason to believe that the 26-year-old can make that leap up and compete at the top.
