Liverpool now interested in ‘highly-qualified’ Newcastle man – journalist

The prospect of losing big names has not really been something Newcastle United have had to consider since the takeover.

Indeed, during the PIF era, the stories around Newcastle have largely centred around what big name incomings will be arriving on Tyneside.

While that is expected to continue this summer ahead of a potential rebuild at the club, there have been a number of big figures at Newcastle who have been tipped to leave.

Bruno Guimaraes has long been linked with a summer move away and, off the field, Dan Ashworth is reportedly attracting interest.

Hailed as “highly qualified” by Gary Neville, Manchester United have been touted as a landing spot.

Now, another club could be keen.

Dan Ashworth: Liverpool FC latest

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Liverpool hold an interest in Ashworth.

The Reds are set for a rebuild of their own ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s imminent departure, with their current sporting director Jorg Schmadtke also set to leave.

While Jacobs claims Liverpool are unlikely to bring ex-sporting director Julian Ward back to Anfield, he told GIVEMESPORT that Ashworth is of interest on Merseyside.

“I don’t see Liverpool returning for Ward because he’s left more recently,” he said.

“That’s a Manchester United candidate. I don’t think Ashworth is beyond the realms of possibility because he’s liked by Liverpool.

“I also think there’s less chance that Liverpool will come in for [Paul] Mitchell because they’ve looked at him in the past and chose not to move. So, it would be surprising if they returned for him.”

Dan Ashworth future: Newcastle face battle

HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey told Geordie Boot Boys last month that Ashworth could leave St James’ Park.

He suggested Newcastle were sounding out replacements, albeit that doesn’t necessarily mean Ashworth is destined to leave.

Attracting big interest, it seems Newcastle face a battle to keep him.
