Newcastle United are doing their best to overtake Manchester United on and off the pitch, but are now having to fend off interest in one of their most important figures.
The Magpies worked tirelessly to bring Dan Ashworth to St James’ Park in 2022, snatching him away from Brighton And Hove Albion and giving him the keys to the footballing kingdom that the owners are looking to build.
As Sporting Director, Ashworth has been tasked with transforming Newcastle at every level, overseeing the football operations at the club and ensuring everything is running as efficiently as possible. Whether it is looking for new signings or helping with the academy, Ashworth is the man calling the shots to make Eddie Howe‘s job as easy as possible.
However, there is a chance that Ashworth’s tenure on Tyneside could come to a premature end. That is because Manchester United want to sign him up following the completion of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial takeover of the Red Devils.
There is a fear that he could make the move to Old Trafford and link up with his friend Dave Brailsford, but a new report from iNews suggests that any deal won’t be cheap.

Man United must pay ‘substantial’ money to get Dan Ashworth from Newcastle
According to iNews, Man United will have to pay a ‘substantial’ compensation package to bring Dan Ashworth in from Newcastle United.
The report states that the new men in charge at Man United want Ashworth to be the club’s sporting director, with Paul Mitchell eyed up as the head of recruitment.
Man United are wanting to completely transform the way they are run behind the scenes, but it remains to be seen if they will get what they want. iNews add that Ashworth is happy with his current job and that the Newcastle owners have no plans to let him leave.
Hopefully that remains the case and Man United hire someone else, as it would be a huge blow to lose Ashworth. He is such a key component behind the scenes, and he has only scratched the surface of what he is capable of on Tyneside.
It would be a real statement of intent if we could fend off interest from Man United, and a sign that Newcastle really do have the ability to become a footballing powerhouse.
