Lewis Hall’s incredible season continued on Thursday night, as the Newcastle United defender won his first ever England cap.
It is a remarkable rise for Lewis Hall, whose move to Newcastle United was being massively criticised 12 months ago.
But the defender has seriously improved under Eddie Howe, and his now a guaranteed starter at St James’ Park. And his performances in black and white have been so good that he has now made his first ever appearance for England.
The 20-year-old came on at half-time during England’s 3-0 win over Greece on Thursday night, replacing Ezri Konsa as Lee Carsley completely reshuffled his back four.
Carsley was impressed with Hall’s contribution, and now the youngster has revealed what was going through his head before he got the news that he was coming on.
Lewis Hall was not expecting to make England debut at half-time

Following his England debut, Hall has spoken to the Independent.
He has admitted that he was not expecting to come on, and was shocked when he found out he was the defender that was taking Konsa’s place for the second half.
“We were warming up like you do at half-time as subs,” he said.
“Obviously, I’ve seen what happened to Ezri in the first half and he just said for all the defenders to keep warm and stuff.
“I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really expecting to come on just because of the position that Ezri plays.
“I think it was (performance coach) Chris Jones who told me and I couldn’t quite believe him at first.
“Luckily, I had another 10 minutes as well then to get myself ready and prepared to come on.
“It’s amazing. I don’t think it’s fully sunk in yet, really.
“I’m sure I’ll lie down tonight and realise what’s happened. It’s an amazing feeling for me and really happy to get the win as well.”
Carsley right to put his trust in Lewis Hall
When it emerged that Konsa had to come off, Carsley had a couple of easy options. Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jarell Quansah were both on the bench and could have taken the Aston Villa player’s place at centre-back.
Carsley even could have put Tino Livramento on at right-back, and moved Kyle Walker inside. That would have meant just two alterations to his defence.
But the interim England boss rolled the dice and turned to Hall. That meant Rico Lewis moving to right-back, and Walker shifting inside to centre-back.
It was a bold decision, but one that paid off. Alan Shearer believes that Hall took his opportunity, and there is now a real chance for him to establish himself as England’s main left-back.
It is a position that England have struggled in, but the win over Greece was the first hint that Hall could be the solution.
He was comfortable in possession, and did not look out of place alongside world class stars like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.
Given the fact he was not even expecting to come on, the former Chelsea lad must have been nervous when he got told he was making his debut. But Hall did himself and Newcastle United fans proud, as he took his club form to the international stage.
