Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall was handed a big reward on Thursday night.

Indeed, after a brilliant season for Newcastle at club level so far, Hall was handed a well-deserved England debut during their 3-0 win away at Greece in the Nations League.

It was a huge night in the 20-year-old’s career, not least because the prospect of seeing him play for the Three Lions seemed a remote possibility not particularly long ago.

Hall, after all, initially struggled for game time following a move from Chelsea, the reason being there were doubts about his defending. He, however, surprised people at the club by putting himself through extra training sessions behind the scenes.

The defender certainly deserved his opportunity and impressed sections of the Newcastle support online with his 45 minutes of action.

Interim England boss Lee Carsley, meanwhile, believes the fact Hall was able to come on and hit the ground running in what was a hostile atmosphere is a testament to the player’s quality.

Speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast, a certain Alan Shearer gave his view.

Alan Shearer reacts as Newcastle’s Lewis Hall makes his England debut

The Newcastle United legend believes Hall looked suited to playing at international level and noticed his role in helping tee up Jude Bellingham’s strike, which led to Newcastle goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos scoring an own goal for England’s second on the night.

Hall confidently took the ball out of defence and played it to Morgan Rogers, who then freed Bellingham to run at goal and have the shot which ultimately deflected off Vlachodimos after hitting the post.

“There is not exactly a load of players around at left-back so when he was given his opportunity and came on in the second half I thought he did really, really well,” he said.

“He looked comfortable. Played a small part in the Bellingham goal with the way they played out from the back. Good night for him as well.

“It wasn’t all plain sailing when he first came to Newcastle, he has had to be patient, but slowly but surely he has found himself a regular this season and there has been a massive improvement. He deserved his chance.”

The Lewis Hall deal gets better and better for Newcastle

Howe is believed to be of the view that the reported £28million Newcastle paid for Hall will soon look a bargain.

On the evidence of the last few months, that would certainly appear to be the case.

A long-term option at left-back already impressing at the very highest of levels, Newcastle struck absolute gold with the Hall signing – even if it took a while to realise it.
