Jason Tindall sends clear message to Anthony Gordon after Newcastle United star is benched

Jason Tindall understands if Anthony Gordon is frustrated at Newcastle United right now.

The 24-year-old has endured a strange few weeks. Gordon was suspended for the Carabao Cup final, but was still ecstatic to see the Magpies’ trophy drought come to an end.

He then suffered an injury on international duty, which delayed his Newcastle United return.

Gordon is fit again, but has had to settle for a place on the Magpies’ bench for wins over Manchester United and Crystal Palace.

The winger has been a guaranteed starter at St James’ Park since the beginning of last season, but that is currently not the case due to the form of Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy.

Jason Tindall comments on Anthony Gordon not starting for Newcastle United

They are both playing spectacularly well, forcing Gordon to remain on the bench.

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s game against Aston Villa, assistant boss Jason Tindall has encouraged Gordon to keep working hard on the training ground, admitting that the Magpies’ number 10 is experienced enough to understand the situation.

“Anthony has played the game long enough to understand that the team is playing extremely well,” he said.

Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy, two players in his position, are performing extremely well.

“At times like this as a player, as frustrating as it can be sometimes, you do need to put the shoe on the other foot and go ‘right, if I was that player performing that way, what would I expect’.

“You would always say that you would expect to be a good teammate, to support that person and continue to work hard every single day so when your moment comes when you step on that pitch you are able to go and deliver the performances that everyone knows you can.

“Testament to all the players. That’s what they have been doing so far.”

Harvey Barnes has taken his opportunity at Newcastle United

Since Gordon was forced to drop out of the starting XI due to suspension, Barnes has excelled on the left wing.

The 27-year-old has struggled for opportunities since his £39million arrival in 2023, while it was reported that Barnes was frustrated earlier in the season.

It has been difficult for him to get in the team ahead of Gordon, but Barnes has seized this chance with both hands.

He has been absolutely exceptional, with Barnes proving why Eddie Howe wanted to sign him.

The Magpies’ number 11 is in excellent form, boasting four goals and two assists in his last five Premier League games. He will aim to add to his tally against Aston Villa on Saturday evening, with Barnes likely to start ahead of Gordon yet again.
