Jamie Carragher is very keen for Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe to get the England job.
Immediately after Gareth Southgate left his role as England manager in the aftermath of Euro 2024, Eddie Howe emerged as a contender.
It is no surprise that the FA are interested in Eddie Howe, and all the initial noise was about him leaving Newcastle United and taking charge of the Three Lions.
Jamie Carragher backed Howe to get the England job ahead of anyone, and it remains to be seen who the FA will go with.
As it stands, Lee Carsley is the interim manager. He did very well in the recent Nations League games, and certainly enhanced his chances of getting the job on a permanent basis.
Newcastle United situation going on in the background
While Carsley strengthens his claim to be the next England manager, there has been unrest behind the scenes at St James’ Park.
There have been issues between Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell, with the fallout from a failed summer transfer window continuing.
However, it has been reported that Howe and Mitchell have held fresh talks, and the hope is that their relationship will now improve.

Jamie Carragher delivers fresh verdict on Eddie Howe and England
It is vital that Howe and Mitchell’s relationship improves, for the sake of Newcastle United.
And when it comes to the England job, Jamie Carragher has told the Stick To Football podcast that he thinks Howe should push for that role if the situation at Newcastle United with Mitchell does not get resolved.
During a conversation about the Howe and Mitchell situation, Ian Wright suggested that the Newcastle United manager might walk away due to the England job being available.
“If Eddie makes a decision soon and he can’t resolve what is happening with Mitchell, then he will probably say I’ll step away for another manager and then the England job is there for him,” he said.
In response to Wright’s comment, Carragher gave his thoughts on what he would do if he was Eddie Howe.
“What you said could happen and that’s why if I’m Eddie Howe or his agent or his people you would be making noises, saying if that job is available for me, I would take it,” he said.
“I do think what Gary is saying… that can’t continue [the situation between Howe and Mitchell]. I do think that sooner or later one of them would have to walk away if this relationship is broken at such an early stage.
“I feel that it’s not just the England job, it’s that the players are pretty special. I think Eddie Howe will be the England manager one day, he’s a young manager and will manage England, and I just think will England have a group of players like this forever?”
What has been reported about Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle United
It is an interesting point from Carragher. But while he has suggested that Howe should be pushing for the England job if he wants it, that is not happening.
In fact, the latest report paints a very different picture.
It was recently reported that Howe is not interested in leaving Newcastle to become the England manager. Elsewhere, it has been claimed that Howe is desperate to continue doing his job at Newcastle United.
But the argument about the England job and the current crop of players is a strong one, and that will come into Howe’s thinking if he is approached by the FA. The chance to work with the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka would be appealing to any manager, especially with the 2026 World Cup looming.
