Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on Eddie Howe possibly leaving Newcastle United to become England manager.
The Three Lions are looking for someone new to take the team forward after Euro 2024, with the FA confirming that Gareth Southgate’s reign is coming to an end.
The Euro 2024 final will be his last game in charge, and it ended in heartbreak. England were beaten 2-1 by Spain, as the wait for football to come home continues.
Now the FA are looking for a replacement, and Eddie Howe is a leading contender for the job. It has been claimed that Howe is relaxed about his future, but it has created a difficult situation for Newcastle United.
The Magpies are now facing up to the possibility of losing their manager to England, with Howe looking like the early favourite to replace Gareth Southgate.

Jamie Carragher wants Eddie Howe to be England manager
And that is music to the ears of Jamie Carragher, who believes that Howe should be the next England manager.
The former Liverpool defender has written a column in the Telegraph to explain why he thinks Howe should replace Southgate, admitting that he would be shocked if the FA did not at least approach the 46-year-old with an offer.
“It has got to be Eddie Howe,” he wrote.
“For me, he is the front-runner by a distance.
The problem for the Football Association is whether Howe considers it the right time for his career to leave Newcastle United. He will have much to think about if the offer comes. I would be staggered if it does not.”
Newcastle United must brace themselves for Eddie Howe approach
As Carragher says, it would be a real shock if the FA did not make a move for Howe in the aftermath of Southgate’s departure.
But if an offer does comes his way, will Howe be interested?
And that is the golden question right now. The FA are interested in Howe, but only time will tell if Howe is interested in the FA and becoming England manager.
It is a unique opportunity, and one that could be difficult to turn down. That will be the fear for Newcastle fans, who have seen the club grow under Howe’s management. Losing him would be a massive blow, especially given the fact that pre-season has already started.
But is the England job an opportunity that could come back around for Howe? That will be what he has to consider. It is all about timing, and he still as so much to achieve in club management with Newcastle United.
However, there might not be another chance for Howe to take charge of his country.
Timing is everything, and now Toon fans brace themselves for an agonising wait.
Newcastle plan to bat off any Howe approach
But while Newcastle fans wait for a resolution, the club are ready to stand firm.
Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales has spoke to the media, stating that they will aim to keep Howe at St James’ Park if they receive an approach from the FA.
“Yes, absolutely,” he said, when asked if Newcastle will fight off any approach for Howe from the FA.
“I don’t want to speak on hypotheticals, so let me just step back and go, going into a new season, for us as a club Eddie has done a brilliant job.”
Eales also stated that Howe signed a new contract with Newcastle United last year – one that does not include a release clause.
