Newcastle United fans are desperate for Eddie Howe to stay at St James’ Park amid speculation over the England job.

The FA are yet to appoint Gareth Southgate’s successor, after he stepped down as England manager following the Euro 2024 final defeat.

In the immediate aftermath of his departure, Eddie Howe emerged as a target for the England job.

He looked like the hot favourite, with Jamie Carragher calling on the FA to appoint Howe. Meanwhile, there seemed to be a bit of unhappiness behind the scenes at Newcastle United amid the exits of Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi combined with the arrival of Paul Mitchell.

Since then, Lee Carsley has been named England’s interim manager, and won both of his Nations League games during the most recent international break. As far as auditions go, Carsley did very well.

But there is still no decision on who will be Southgate’s permanent replacement, and it has been reported that the FA are going to speak to external candidates amid interest in Howe.

Eddie Howe’s current stance on becoming England manager

Whether that results in them approaching Newcastle United for permission to speak to their manager remains to be seen.

But while the FA might want to appoint Eddie Howe as the next England boss, he might not necessarily be interested in being appointed.

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that Howe is currently not interested in replacing Southgate and becoming the next England manager. That information has come from Telegraph sources that are close to Howe.

If the FA did decide to make a move, Newcastle would receive more than £5million in compensation for Howe.

Newcastle might be able to hold on to Howe after all

When the England job first became available, there was an understandable sense of fear that Howe would get the job.

It would give him the chance to work with an incredible crop of players, as well as the opportunity to immortalise himself as a manager by potentially winning the 2026 World Cup.

But as time has passed, the prospect of Howe getting the England job has felt less likely.

Right now, Carsley looks like the outstanding candidate. He did really well during his first couple of games as interim manager, and there appeared to be a freshness in the Three Lions’ performances. New players got an opportunity, while he set about getting more out of the likes of Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

That is music to the ears of Newcastle United fans, who obviously want Howe to continue in his role on Tyneside. He has been amazing ever since his arrival in the North East, and there is so much more to achieve.

The England job is obviously very appealing, but it might not be an opportunity that comes Howe’s way. While his time for international management may eventually arrive, the suggestion for now is that Howe’s future is at St James’ Park.
