Newcastle United will be aiming to finally get back to winning ways in the Premier League this weekend but it won’t be easy against title-chasing Arsenal.

Eddie Howe guided his Newcastle United side to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals – where they will meet Brentford – with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Wednesday, just a few days after losing to them in the league.

It’s a result Newcastle desperately needed after a rotten October in the Premier League. The Magpies haven’t won a league game since defeating lowly Wolves on September 15.

They will try and build on the momentum from Wednesday’s win to change that but it will be tough against an Arsenal side who are in real need of three points themselves.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal team news

Callum Wilson will be absent until after the international break as he continues his recovery. Howe said in his pre-match press conference: “Callum is doing okay, he’s building his load again.

“There was no real injury but just a feeling in his body that he couldn’t push as hard as he wanted. We’ll see how he is but probably with the two-week gap it’s best to leave it.”

Meanwhile, Sven Botman, Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles are all still sidelined.

Jacob Murphy missed Chelsea with a muscle strain but there has been no update on his condition.

Anthony Gordon returned on Wednesday and Howe also offered an update on his and Alexander Isak’s conditions: “They both feel ok, we will assess how they feel today, 48 hours after the game.

“They have both had niggling injuries so we’ll make a decision today. We need to make sure whoever enters the pitch against Arsenal is in the best physical condition.”

Arsenal, meanwhile, are without captain Martin Odegaard, Riccardo Calafiori, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu while Ben White and Gabriel are doubts.

Prediction

Newcastle picked up a galvanising win over Chelsea in midweek but their league form remains poor and that will be difficult to change against Arsenal.

They might have mounting injuries but the Gunners can’t afford too many more slips up if they want to challenge for the Premier League title and will give everything to ensure they win. It might be too much for the Magpies.
