Newcastle United bounced back from their weekend defeat and got revenge over Chelsea with a 2-0 victory.
Eddie Howe‘s side suffered a 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, but Newcastle United came out on top in the second leg of their double-header.
Howe made five changes to his starting lineup at St James’ Park, including a return for Anthony Gordon after he missed out on Sunday with a thigh injury.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring for the hosts after Chelsea struggled to handle Newcastle’s energetic press and just three minutes later the lead was doubled after Axel Disasi’s own goal.
Newcastle have now booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and will learn their opponents when the draw takes place on Wednesday night.
Here are the player ratings from Newcastle United vs Chelsea:

Nick Pope – 6
Hardly tested in the first half. Made a few routine saves and kept calm on the ball.
Emil Krafth – 5
Steady at the back but beaten a few too many times by Mykhailo Mudryk on his side. Expect Tino Livramento to make a swift return at right-back.
Lloyd Kelly – 7
Made his first start since the Carabao Cup match against Wimbledon. Looked solid at centre-back and made a couple of important interceptions as well as a great block on Joao Felix in the first half.
Fabian Schar – 6
After a shaky performance against the same opposition on the weekend, Schar was much better this time around. Kept his back-line organised and made some important challenges.
Lewis Hall – 7
Fantastic against Chelsea on Sunday and brilliant against his former side once again. He looks more and more comfortable every match. The growth in his confidence is clear with Hall not afraid to pick out 50-yard passes and take on his man.
Sandro Tonali – 8
Outstanding in both halves of the pitch. Going forward, Tonali was tenacious in the press and won the ball high for Isak’s opener. Defensively, he made a great block to deny Chelsea when the game was goalless.
A performance adored by the St James’ Park faithful.
Joelinton – 5
Chelsea struggled to deal with his physicality. Repeatedly won the ball up high and led Newcastle’s press but marked down for an unforgivable miss in the opening few minutes.
Sean Longstaff – 6
As always, Longstaff was a work-horse in the Newcastle midfield, covering almost every blade of grass in what was a combative performance. Had to be cautious after picking up an early booking for a clumsy tackle on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Joe Willock – 7
The creative spark that Newcastle have been missing in recent weeks. Willock was given the freedom to roam and find space, and he did it superbly. Played a huge part in the second goal which has gone down as an own goal.
Anthony Gordon – 8
Oh how Newcastle missed Gordon on the weekend. Made an impact immediately after charging down the Chelsea back line. Was full of energy on the right flank from the very first minute and was unlucky to leave without a goal or assist to his name.
Alexander Isak – 9
A superstar performance. Led brilliantly from the front and found Joelinton early on with a whipped cross. Opened the scoring minutes later with a poacher’s finish after Newcastle hunted as a pack and won the ball high.
Those contract talks might not be distracting him after all…
Substitutes
Bruno Guimaraes – 7
Came on and kept Newcastle defensively solid in midfield as Chelsea pushed to get back in the game. Led by example with some lovely play late on.
William Osula – 7
Held up the ball fantastically and drew a couple of important fouls that helped Newcastle secure the win. Came extremely close to scoring his first Newcastle goal when his shot rebounded off the post.
Tino Livramento – 6
Replaced fellow Chelsea graduate Lewis Hall and kept the energy high while also providing an extra number in defence.
Dan Burn – 6
Brought on to see out the win for Newcastle in the final 20 minutes. Solid with no mistakes.
Lewis Miley – N/A
Came on for the final minutes. Fantastic to have him back.
