Anthony Gordon retained his place in Lee Carsley’s England lineup for the Nations League clash against Finland on Tuesday evening.
Lee Carsley did what Gareth Southgate was afraid to do by starting Anthony Gordon against the Republic of Ireland.
The 23-year-old Newcastle United ace impressed on the left and kept his starting spot against Finland, where the Three Lions picked up a 2-0 win.
Harry Kane scored twice on his 100th England cap to keep England second in their Nations League group.
Gordon was impressive once again off the left before he was replaced by Eberechi Eze just after the hour mark.
Anthony Gordon stars for England
Gordon endured a frustrating summer at Euro 2024 after working his way into Southgate’s squad.
He was only given a handful of minutes in the tournament and ended up making more headlines for his bike crash than he did on the pitch.
It has been suggested that Gordon may have annoyed Southgate because of his crash, but he appears to have a much better relationship with England’s interim boss Carsley.
Two impressive performances against Ireland and Finland has helped Gordon to cement a starting spot under Carsley which should give the Newcastle star a big confidence boost for his return to club football.
It has been a relatively slow start to the Premier League campaign for Gordon given his incredible standards last season, but hopefully he can kick on after a successful international break.
What the media have said about Anthony Gordon’s display
Gordon did not find his way onto the scoresheet, but he offered plenty going forward through his energetic running and ability to beat a defender.
The media have given their verdict on Gordon’s performance, and there was nothing but praise for the Newcastle ace.

The Independent gave Gordon a 7/10 rating and added: “Ripped apart his full-back with a number of searing dribbles.”
The Standard said: “Positive as ever and repeatedly got to the byline. Was not afforded the same space to run in behind as against the Irish, though. Might have had a simple chance had Kane not taken header off him,” with Gordon receiving a 6/10 rating.
Finally, The Telegraph also handed Gordon a 7/10 rating and added: “Another lively performance from the Newcastle winger who looks like he has a point to prove after being benched for most of the Euros.”
