It is back to back starts and back to back wins in an England shirt for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
Gordon has admitted that Euro 2024 was disappointing, with the 23-year-old making just one appearance for England at this summer’s tournament. He was constantly snubbed, with Gareth Southgate not happy about Gordon falling off his bike and the comments he made about England’s style of play.
But now Euro 2024 is behind Gordon, and Southgate’s reign as manager is over. Instead, Lee Carsley has taken interim charge, and has guided the Three Lions to wins over Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Carsley opted to start Gordon on the left wing in both games, and it proved to be an excellent decision. Gordon was impressive in the win over Republic of Ireland, while he also stood out at Wembley on Tuesday night.
Anthony Gordon impresses for England again
Gordon played 66 minutes against Finland, starting on the left of attack on a landmark night for Harry Kane. The captain won his 100th cap, and commemorated it with two outstanding goals.
Sadly for Gordon, he was unable to score himself, despite having multiple opportunities to find the net.
But it was a lively and energetic performance from the Newcastle United winger, who proved once again why he is such an asset to this England team. His speed and dribbling ability is a major weapon, and one that Southgate should have utilised during the Euros.

Matthew Upson loves ‘different’ Anthony Gordon
Gordon would have added something different to a struggling England team over the summer, but was ignored.
Now he is getting his chances, and is showing how dangerous he can be on the international stage.
Gordon certainly caught the eye of pundit Matthew Upson on Tuesday night, with the former England international on commentary for the Nations League game on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I love the directness of Anthony Gordon,” he said during England’s win over Finland.
“That area of the pitch for England has been a big topic for England over the summer.
“For me, Anthony Gordon does look the part – he adds a different dimension.”
Newcastle need Gordon to carry on his England form
During these past two Nations League games, Gordon has looked back to his old self.
This comes after a slow start to the season in a Newcastle United shirt, with Eddie Howe admitting that Gordon is not fully match fit yet.
But his sharpness will have been boosted by two starts for England, and that should help the Magpies as they prepare to return to action.
Next up for Newcastle United is a trip to the West Midlands, as Howe’s side take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
Gordon will be keen to start that game, and carry on the momentum he has built up during the international break.
