Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon endured something of a strange summer.
After the initial buzz of his inclusion in England’s squad for Euro 2024 following a hugely productive season for Newcastle, Gordon barely played a minute under Gareth Southgate, something he admitted was a major disappointment for him.
That came amid suggestions the winger could be sold to Liverpool as Newcastle looked to avoid a ten-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, which they duly pulled off by selling Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh instead.
Gordon was reportedly tempted by the idea of a move to Anfield too and has returned to Newcastle this season not fully fit, as confirmed Eddie Howe.
After such a strong season last time out, it’s been a relatively underwhelming start to his second full campaign as a Newcastle player – albeit the fitness issue cannot be ignored.
The hope is that Gordon will soon get back up to speed and an impressive performance for England against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday should certainly help that.

When pressed about what was missing, the 23-year-old talked of a lack of dynamism within the squad.

Even during the tournament, he openly talked of what he could bring to the England squad after a series of underwhelming performances in the group stage.
That kind of confidence is to be admired. He knows his worth and what he can do.
