The fixtures for the 2025/26 Premier League season have been released, and Newcastle United have learned when they will play in an extremely important campaign.

After finishing the 2024/25 campaign on a high, there is no doubt Eddie Howe and his players will be eager to push on and register an even better Premier League finish in the upcoming season.

This season will be a lot different for Newcastle United, as they have Champions League football to manage as well as a competitive Premier League which now includes Leeds United and bitter rivals Sunderland, who they will play away in December and at home in March.

Simon Jordan thinks Newcastle have much more quality than Sunderland, and they will not have much of an issue when the derby comes around.

Elsewhere, Jacob Murphy could come up against an old nemesis at Sunderland, with Duje Caleta-Car reportedly wanted by the Black Cats this summer. While Newcastle reignite old rivalries, they also have to worry about the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal, who will be as prominent as ever in the Premier League.

With a tough start of the season now locked in for Newcastle in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, here is how Newcastle have fared in their last five opening games of the season.

Newcastle United usually enjoy a winning start to their Premier League season

The Magpies finished fifth last season, but fans will be expecting to better that, even with Champions League football on the schedule.

Howe is eager to bring new players to the club to ensure that he can push his squad higher up the Premier League table. Several names have been linked with moves to Tyneside, with Newcastle holding talks for Joao Pedro, but it is believed that no deal is close.

Last season saw Newcastle fail to make any additions to their starting XI, but that did not stop them from getting off to a winning start. Newcastle beat Southampton 1-0 at St James’ Park but had to overcome adversity when Fabian Schar was sent off for an alleged headbutt to Ben Brereton Diaz.

The season before, Newcastle dominated Aston Villa at home, winning 5-1. That game was the league debut of Sandro Tonali, who left his mark by scoring the opening goal. Harvey Barnes also scored on his debut to send the Magpies top for the first week of the season.

At the start of the historic 2022/23 campaign, Newcastle welcomed newly-promoted Nottingham Forest to St James’ Park, but did them no favours as goals from Callum Wilson and Schar secured all three points at the beginning of a memorable season.

The 2021/22 campaign was the last that saw Steve Bruce in the dugout for the start of it. After looking sharp in the opening stages, Newcastle eventually lost 4-2 to a West Ham side that would qualify for Europe.

Finally, the only away game on the list, Newcastle faced West Ham at an empty London Stadium at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in September 2020. Debut goals from Wilson and Jeff Hendrick ensured the Magpies got off to a winning start that season.

Newcastle United to play several pre-season games ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season

With the fixtures now out, fans will no doubt be excited for the season to begin and see their players back at St James’ Park.

In the meantime, the Magpies have a pre-season schedule that fans will see Newcastle play sooner rather than later.

It has been announced that Newcastle will play Celtic at Celtic Park for the first-ever Adidas trophy in July. The two clubs have qualified for the Champions League next season, so it is a good test for them ahead of their returns to Europe.

After that, Newcastle travel to Singapore for the first time in 29 years to play Arsenal, another big test ahead of the new season. Howe’s side will then travel to South East Asia to play games against the K-League all-stars and Tottenham.

Finally, the Magpies will return home for the third instalment of the Sela Cup. This edition of the competition will undoubtedly be the hardest, with Newcastle playing Spanish giants Atletico Madrid at St James’ Park.
