Newcastle United are still in a battle to keep Eddie Howe away from the England job.
While the speculation has died down, there will soon come a time when the FA decide to firm up their plans to replace Gareth Southgate. When his departure was confirmed, it was reported that Eddie Howe is a leading candidate for the England job.
Since then, the FA have appointed Lee Carsley as interim manager. He will take charge of the upcoming Nations League games, with three Newcastle United players in his England squad – Anthony Gordon, Nick Pope and Tino Livramento.
The hope will be that Carsley does so well during his interim reign that the FA decide to give him the job permanently.
However, they may still attempt to bring Eddie Howe in from Newcastle United instead of Carsley.
Newcastle would receive more than £5m for Eddie Howe
If the FA do decide to make a move for Howe, they will have to dig deep into their pockets to pay Newcastle United compensation.

That is according to the Northern Echo, who report that the FA will have to pay more than £5million in compensation to take Eddie Howe from Newcastle United.
They add that Howe has three years left to run on his current Toon deal, with his contract at St James’ Park set to expire in 2027.
Paul Mitchell’s interesting take on Eddie Howe and the England job
Every Toon fan is hoping that Howe will stay, and many are fearful of England’s interest.
However, Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has put a different spin on England wanting to replace Southgate with Howe.
“The way I look at interest in general is that it’s proof that someone’s doing a really great job,” he told the Northern Echo.
“I think Eddie has said this, and I’m no different, we’re both proud Englishmen. I think Eddie getting recognised with a job like that, because of the work he’s done, is fair recognition for the really good job that he’s done.
“We want Eddie Howe as our head coach for as long as we can. But we also recognise we are on a journey, and we also recognise his quality and his potential as well.
“Once again, I’ve never been a guy scared of interest in any of our staff members, especially our head coach, and especially from a level of organisation that the FA is.”
Mitchell may have to convince Howe to stay at Newcastle United
As Mitchell says, England’s interest in Howe is a testament to his ability as a manager and the work he has done at St James’ Park.
However, it may also be up to Mitchell to convince Howe to stay on Tyneside if an offer from the FA comes his way.
He will need to prove to Howe that he can be successful here, and will be given the tools to do his job to the best of his ability.
You could argue that has not been the case as of late, with Newcastle making no major signings this summer. Howe wanted a winger and a centre-back, yet neither arrived.
Newcastle’s summer transfer window was a failure, which will make it harder for Howe to match the club’s ambitions.
If England do come calling, Mitchell must convince Howe that this window was a one-off and that St James’ Park is the best place for him to achieve his management goals.
