Newcastle United’s future at St James’ Park hangs in the balance.
Toon fans are waiting to see what the club decide to do with St James’ Park. Their options are to either expand their current ground, or build a completely new stadium for Newcastle United to play in.
Newcastle United are expected to make a decision in March, as Toon officials weigh up what is best for the club and its fans.
There has always been a desire to remain at St James’ Park, but that presents problems. It will be very difficult and expensive to increase its capacity, although not impossible.
Moving grounds presents its own problems, with the main one being the fanbase’s emotional connection to St James’ Park. A lot of Newcastle United supporters will not want to leave, which is understandable.
However, it feels like there has been a shift in attitude in recent months.

How Amanda Staveley leaving impacted Newcastle United’s stadium plans
There has been more and more talk of relocating, as PIF consider a new Newcastle United stadium.
And that shift in attitude coincided with Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi selling their shares and departing the club in the summer of 2024.
According to the Athletic, some people within Newcastle United believe there was a shift in the club’s attitude towards a new stadium after Staveley left.
They state that there was suddenly more of a willingness to consider leaving St James’ Park and build a new stadium.
What Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi said about leaving St James’ Park
This is further evidence that Staveley had the best interests of the fans at heart.
While a new stadium will be great for Newcastle United from a commercial perspective, it would be a huge move away from tradition.
It is a move that West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur have made. Some of their fans will argue that it was not for the better.
It is interesting to hear that there was a change in attitude once Staveley and Ghodoussi were no longer involved. They were always keen to remain at St James’ Park and expand the club’s current ground if possible.
In 2022, Ghodoussi told the Athletic that they would look into expanding St James’ Park as opposed to building a new stadium.
“St James’ Park is unique, special, the cathedral of the city, sitting on its hill,” he said.
“We will definitely look at expanding it, working with the city and council to see what we can do. There are a lot of things that need to happen first, but that’s the way forward.
“If we can get it to 60 or 65,000 thousand, amazing, and we will look at every possibility.
“But are we going to build a new stadium? No. It would be like tearing your soul out.”
Fast forward to 2025 and ‘tearing your soul out’ is an option that Newcastle United officials are contemplating.
