Newcastle United are considering their options regarding the future of St James’ Park.
Since the takeover in October 2021, a question on the lips of many Newcastle fans is whether St James’ Park would be expanded or if the new owners would look to build a new stadium elsewhere.
A new stadium is considered a once-in-a-generation opportunity while it could expanding St James’ Park could cost up to £1bn. The focus would be on the Gallowgate End and the East Stand with Newcastle eager to create their own Yellow Wall on Tyneside.
Alternatively, if they decided to go in a different direction it could cost Newcastle £3bn for a new stadium which would likely be located in Leazes Park, just a stone’s throw away from the existing site.
While discussions weighing up both options have taken place. Fans finally have a date that they should expect a final decision to be made.

Newcastle United to make stadium decision in March 2025
With the future of St James’ Park a hot topic, Newcastle bosses met with the fan advisory board (FAB) to gauge opinions from supporters.
According to journalist Joel Bland, fans should now expect to get the final decision on St James’ Park in March. This comes following the most recent FAB meeting in November where the stadium was discussed with a wider group of fans.
In April, it was reported that Newcastle hierarchy wants to stay at St James’ Park and with a decision yet to be made this could still be the case.
According to the Telegraph, a club survey suggested that 70% of fans would rather see St James’ Park expanded than build a new stadium while Newcastle City Council are keen to revamp the surrounding area hoping the club will stay put in the city centre.
When will Newcastle stadium work begin?
While Newcastle still have to wait for a decision on St James’ Park, once the choice is made public work could start shortly after.
Newcastle fans can expect “concrete” progress on the stadium to be made in 2025 as feasibility studies have already taken place to see what is possible for St James’ Park.
In the meantime, there are a number of events taking place at the end of the season including the Magic Weekend and Sam Fender’s return to St James’ Park.
This is a key moment for the future of so many Newcastle fans who will be hoping that whatever decision is made is the best for the future of the club.
