Six weeks ago, Lucien Favre reportedly told Newcastle he wanted to be their manager. Now he’s a target for Manchester United.

The 64-year-old missed out on the Toon job to Eddie Howe, and didn’t even make the final two-man shortlist.

The new Toon owners wanted either Unai Emery or Howe, but had to settle for the latter after a bid for the Spaniard ended in embarrassing fashion.

But while Favre didn’t get the Newcastle United job, he may have another route into Premier League management.

Could Lucien Favre join Manchester United?

Manchester United are currently looking for a new manager after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday. The Red Devils reportedly want an interim manager.

And they’ve been linked with multiple former Newcastle targets.

 

According to the Telegraph, they’ve interviewed Favre, Ralf Rangnick and Rudi Garcia about taking over. All three of those men were linked with replacing Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.

There was real excitement when Favre was wanted by Newcastle. He plays attacking football and has history with building clubs and helping them climb the table.

Rangnick was also an exciting target, as he reportedly had a plan to make the Magpies title contenders within three years.

In the end, Amanda Staveley and co went with Howe.

The new era got off to a strange start. Howe missed the game due to COVID, but his team looked much better than they had before. However, a 3-3 draw saw them drop to the bottom of the table.

While his arrival has got supporters buzzing, time will tell whether or not Howe is the right man.

But we might soon have the chance to see what we could have won if Favre gets the Manchester United job.
