‘Exceptional’ Newcastle youngster named alongside Lamine Yamal and Kobbie Mainoo in top 10 list

Newcastle United have an exciting batch of youngsters coming through the ranks and Lewis Miley has etched his name into an impressive list.

There has been a notable shift towards investing in the club’s youth ever since PiF’s takeover in 2021.

Eddie Howe also deserves a lot of credit for putting his faith in the club’s youngsters, with Newcastle also adjusting their transfer strategy to target young, upcoming stars such as Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall.

The club’s plan to develop young talent suffered a setback this summer with Newcastle forced to sell both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to avoid a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules, but there are still several exciting talents on the books at St James’ Park.

Perhaps the most exciting is Lewis Miley, who was hailed as “exceptional” by Jason Tindall after his incredible breakthrough to the first team last year.

Lewis Miley named in top-10 youngsters list

Miley was a shining light for Newcastle last season and one of the only silver linings to the club’s injury crisis.

The 18-year-old made 26 senior appearances for the Magpies across all competitions in 2023/24 and he has already worked his way into Newcastle’s best academy players of all time.

A back injury last season has slowed his progress, but his impressive performances in black and white have still earned him a spot in an impressive list.

CIES Football Observatory’s latest football report assessed the top 100 teenagers in world football, with youngsters ranked based on their experience and sporting level of matches played.

Miley not only featured in the top 100, but he ranked within the top 10. He was placed alongside the likes of Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo (5th) and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal (1st).

Tottenham’s Archie Gray (6th) was the only other Premier League star in the top 10 alongside Miley and Mainoo.

Lewis Miley can have a big impact on return

Miley’s injury setback last season was a big blow, but Newcastle have afforded the youngster time to recover this summer and he has not been rushed back into action.

He has missed the opening four games of the season and it will still be a few more weeks until he is considered for selection again.

However, Newcastle are pleased with Miley’s progress and the club have hatched a plan to use Miley more “sparingly” this season to avoid overloading him.

Miley will have fierce competition for midfield minutes against the likes of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, but Newcastle’s exciting academy graduate can still have a big role to play in cup competitions and when needed in the Premier League.
