Eddie Howe will hope to extend his impressive record against Manchester United as Newcastle United manager this Sunday.
Newcastle United managed to avoid being distracted by the Carabao Cup celebrations by resuming their Premier League campaign with back-to-back victories over Brentford and Leicester City.
Up next for the Magpies is a visit from Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, and another victory would put Newcastle in a strong position for Champions League qualification.

Newcastle comfortably beat Man United 2-0 in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford, and now Eddie Howe is looking to do the double over Ruben Amorim.

Eddie Howe’s brilliant Newcastle United team talk vs Man United
In the 2022/23 campaign, Newcastle United’s wait for silverware was extended when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Wembley.
However, Howe got his revenge less than two months later when the sides met again in the Premier League. Newcastle beat Erik ten Hag’s side 2-0 with Joe Willock and Callum Wilson on the scoresheet.
Before the match, Ten Hag criticised Newcastle’s tactics and Howe used his comments as fuel to motivate his players.
In the Amazon Prime ‘We Are Newcastle United’ series, Howe’s brilliant team talk before the clash was recorded for all to see.
“My final message today, I’m going to do something that I rarely do,” Howe said. “But I felt upon hearing the comments I needed to relay it to you.
“So comments from their manager [Ten Hag]: ‘They have the lowest ball in play time in the league and are quite successful at slowing the game down. It is an annoying team to play against, so we have to find a way to play against them. So it is up to us that we get the speed in the game and we’re also dependant on the refereeing as well.’
“Why am I telling you that? If they want a quick game, coming here? Let’s f****** give it to ‘em. Let’s blow them away with our running, let’s be intense in every action that we do, let’s make it a quick game. Let’s go.”
Newcastle players will not need motivating before a match against a side such as Manchester United, but there was no chance the Magpies were suffering a defeat that day.
Eddie Howe’s brilliant record vs Man United
Howe can do the league double over Manchester United if Newcastle win this weekend, and it would extend Howe’s impressive record against the Red Devils.
Roy Keane called Newcastle ‘cocky’ when they suffered a 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford last season, but actually it was the only time Manchester United have beaten Newcastle in their last five attempts.
In fact, since Howe took charge in November 2021, he has only lost twice to Manchester United – last season and at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle have never done a Premier League double over Manchester United in the same season, so Howe can make history with a win on Sunday afternoon.
