Alan Shearer had the last laugh as Newcastle United beat Manchester United on Monday night.
They were the favourites going into the game at Old Trafford, and Newcastle United fully deserved their 2-0 win.
It was a comfortable win for Newcastle United, with Alexander Isak and Joelinton scoring in the first half to hand Eddie Howe’s side a fifth consecutive win in all competitions.
The win lifts Newcastle back up to fifth in the Premier League, while Chelsea’s defeat to Ipswich Town means that the Magpies are just three points off the top four.
Howe’s side are enjoying a rich vein of form, while they inflicted more misery on Manchester United, whose fans were rather quiet at Old Trafford as they ended 2024 with yet another defeat.

Alan Shearer gets the last laugh over Manchester United fans
For the majority of the 90 minutes, all you could hear were the Newcastle United fans – especially once Isak scored the opening goal of the game in the fourth minute.
However, there was a brief moment when the Man United fans could be heard.
They took aim at Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer, chanting: “Cheer up, Alan Shearer, oh what can it mean…”
As is often the case, he who laughs last laughs the loudest, and that has certainly been the case for Newcastle’s all-time leading goalscorer.
After the game, Shearer posted on X: “Ok I’ll cheer up!!!”

After biting back at the Red Devils, Shearer took time to praise the performance of Eddie Howe’s team.
He posted on X: “Start to finish the best team. Well done the TOON.”
Comfortable win as Newcastle end torrid run at Old Trafford
Newcastle really were the best team from start to finish. It was a staggeringly comfortable win, at a ground where the Magpies do not have a great record. In truth, Newcastle should have scored more!
Before this 2-0 win, the last time Newcastle won a Premier League game at Old Trafford was December 2013. On that day, Yohan Cabaye scored the only goal of the game for Alan Pardew’s side.
11 years later and Newcastle have finally taken all three points from their trip to Old Trafford, as they end 2024 in emphatic style.
The Magpies have now won four Premier League games in a row without conceding a goal, and will be full of confidence going into Saturday’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
