Eddie Howe statement could be bad news for William Osula ahead of Newcastle United vs Birmingham City

Will Osula scored his first Newcastle United goal in the previous round of the FA Cup, and will hope to add to his tally against Birmingham City.

The striker has had limited opportunities since joining Newcastle United, with the club viewing Will Osula as a project player.

He is still very raw, but Osula’s goal against Bromley proved that the potential is there.

Newcastle know Osula is improving, and the 21-year-old will be hoping to return to the starting XI for the Magpies’ FA Cup fourth round clash with Birmingham City.

However, that is suddenly less likely to happen, with Eddie Howe providing an update on Callum Wilson’s status ahead of the game at St Andrew’s.

Wilson made his return from injury against Arsenal, and Howe has told the media that the 32-year-old now believes he is ready to start.

“He seems fine,” he said.

“Callum is very, very confident about his body at this moment in time. I think he’s gone through several things slightly differently this time round in his recovery, and he’s done a lot of work. He’s trained very hard for this moment. He’s got a lot of miles behind him.

“He feels robust, strong. In his eyes, he feels ready to start games, impact the team and play to his full potential. So fingers crossed his body will respond in a positive way.”

The last time Callum Wilson started for Newcastle United

With Wilson pushing to start, Osula could be out of luck.

It will all depend on how the medical team feel about Wilson. On the one hand, there will be a willingness to get minutes into Wilson’s legs. On the other, Newcastle will want to be very cautious with their number nine.

The striker has not started for Newcastle at all this season, making just five substitute appearances.

The last time Wilson started a Newcastle United game was April 5th 2024. On that day, the Magpies beat Burnley 4-1 at Turf Moor.

10 months have since passed without Wilson being named in a Newcastle United starting XI. He will hope that changes on Saturday against Birmingham City.
