Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has shared his view on the news that the club are looking to change the badge after 37 years.
Since its introduction in 1988, the iconic club crest has been left untouched. However, the club is now looking for ways to modernise the existing design to bring it into the digital age.
Newcastle United fans were furious at the club badge announcement, claiming that there was no need for such an iconic badge to be changed.
In the last week, Newcastle fans have produced mock-up badges which they believe are better than the design that was leaked online.
Former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino told Newcastle fans to get over the badge change, claiming that the change is ‘inevitable’.
Newcastle staff are aware of concerns over the new badge, and Eddie Howe has now also shared his view on the change.

Eddie Howe suggests Newcastle United badge change is a good thing
The updated badge is a huge change for many fans of the club who do not know anything different. It completely alters the identity of the club and the way many people outside Newcastle will look at them.
Howe was asked for his views on the proposed badge change in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Magpies’ important game against Arsenal on Sunday.
“I am a great believer in respecting tradition. But then…you have to try and move forward,” he said.
“If something does need to be changed for the betterment of the club, then I am all for that.
“The great thing, though, that I took from it was the collaboration with the supporters – that has to be there.
“It can’t be done without their consent.”
It has been confirmed that Newcastle are taking plenty of time with the new badge, ensuring they make the best decision possible for the fans. A new badge is not expected to be included on club merchandise until the beginning of the 2026/27 season.
Newcastle United fans attend badge consultation event
After the announcement that the badge change was being explored, Newcastle fans were invited to an initial consultation event, which gave club officials the chance to explain their decision and to answer any questions.
During the event on Wednesday night, it was confirmed by a fan in attendance that Newcastle do not want the new badge to be circular.
The individual leading the change is a lifelong Newcastle fan and has also worked with Nike for 15 years. Research into the change has been going on since August 2024, and the castle on the current badge was voted as the most important to keep by the fan surveys, with the seahorses voted least important.
Additionally, the main issues with the current badge include symmetry, the lines on the seahorses’ mane, the banner inconsistency and jokes from external brands about the lion looking like other creatures on certain prints.
