Newcastle United fans have not taken well to the new club badge announcement, but a new concept has them second-guessing.

After a sustained period of change both on and off the pitch, since Mike Ashley left the club in 2021, the announcement to change the club badge is undoubtedly the biggest one of the lot.

Newcastle United confirmed plans to refine their club badge, which has been in place since 1988. The news has not gone down well with many.

After seeing the announcement, Newcastle fans were furious that their badge was being changed. Many felt like the identity of the club was being ripped away.

Newcastle’s badge design is not modern; the change is being made to bring the iconic crest into the modern day and save on costs. Insiders blame the seahorses on Newcastle’s crest for the change, with the feeling within the club being that they are hard to sew onto the strips.

While fans remain concerned about the future of the iconic club badge, an alternative concept has been shared online which has been warmly received by many.

Newcastle United fans react to concept club badge design

The club badge is not the only thing set to change regarding Newcastle’s identity.

Newcastle could announce new stadium plans at the end of the season, with a 65,000-seater ground preferred by the PIF.

A new stadium would cost Newcastle £1.2bn, and in regards to location, Leazes Park is Newcastle’s preferred site.

In the meantime, a concept design for a new badge has been shared on social media. It is a remaster of one of Newcastle’s old badges, which displayed a Magpie perched in front of a castle by the river.

While some were opposed to that design, others believed it would be the right fit for the future.

“I think with that one they could make classy looking shirts. Most clubs are going for the round logos which I’m not a big fan of but I think this doesn’t look too modern and it’s part of the history so if they do a circular one this would be perfect,” said one fan on social media platform X

Another Newcastle fan said: “That’s mint that!”

“I wouldn’t mind that one like.” commented one Newcastle fan, while another said: “It’s tidy this.”

One fan suggested a minor design change, saying: “This, but add a new magpie so it is ‘new’, also… One for sorrow.. 2 for Joy.”

Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “It’s perfect!”

A big week ahead amid Newcastle United badge announcement

As fans wait to see official designs shared by the club, there is a lot that needs to happen before any decisions are made.

It has been confirmed that there will be a consultation event for season ticket holders and members to allow fans to ask questions and understand why the decision to redesign the badge has been made.

Newcastle season ticket holders and members have been sent a survey to fill out regarding the badge; the deadline for that is Friday, 16 May 2025.

The fan advisory board has also recommended that the wider fan base should be given a choice of options during the second stage consultation. A date for that is yet to be confirmed.
