Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has shared his opinion on Newcastle United’s decision to design a new club badge.
An announcement was made on Friday afternoon that the Magpies’ iconic badge was going to be refined for the modern age after 37 years of the current crest being used.
Newcastle United cited that the ‘intricate nature’ of the current badge is causing problems and comes at an increased cost, so they are exploring a more cost-effective solution while keeping the fans at the heart of the decision-making process.
Upon hearing the news, Newcastle fans were outraged at the club badge change, with many being immediately opposed to the decision.
Fans were even more frustrated when Newcastle’s club crest survey was revealed. They believed the questions were narrow and put in place to fit a certain narrative, which would allow them to make the changes to the badge.
As Newcastle fans continue to be outraged by the decision, Tony Cascarino has given his verdict, which many fans will not like.

Tony Cascarino on Newcastle United’s club badge announcement
This will be Newcastle’s fifth club crest in their history, and a first change since 1988. The redesign completely changes the identity of the club and could even have an impact on the way football fans outside of Newcastle look at the club.
A big change to the crest could be the seahorses. Newcastle’s badge is lopsided due to the seahorses, which makes the badge very difficult to stitch on.
While Newcastle fans are furious with the club’s decision, Cascarino does not understand what all the fuss is about.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, the former Chelsea and Marseille striker said: “I’m not sure how many (badges) Newcastle have had, but I’m sure it’s not just one.
“Do you know what my line is? Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. I just think you can get caught up. Yes, it’s nostalgia and it’s traditional. Of course it’s iconic, I can’t imagine the Liverpool Kop badge and what that would be if it was done in a different way.
“I’m sure that’s changed over the years as well, like all badges. I think this is a common theme now, the badges are getting changed all the time.”
When will Newcastle United’s new badge be used?
For many, the decision to change the club badge has been hard to take. The badge is the centrepiece of the club, and there are very few badges like it around today.
While it has come as a shock to the system, a new club badge is still a long way from coming to fruition.
Reports have stated that Newcastle’s badge will change from the 2026/27 season, so there is still over a year for designs to be made and for fans to vote on it.
Fans now have to trust club officials to make the right choice for the club, who are understandably very nervous after the announcement.
