Newcastle United took on Chelsea on Monday night without Harvey Barnes.

Heading into the game, The Magpies were expected to be without Kieran Trippier, who suffered a calf injury during the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But there was also a concern regarding Harvey Barnes heading into the game too, as it had been reported that the 26-year-old had not been seen in Toon training on Wednesday.

There was no update from Eddie Howe on Friday, be it positive or negative, but the game at Stamford Bridge arrived with the winger nowhere to be seen.

Newcastle United stated that Barnes was missing due to a hamstring issue, and the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope has provided a bit more information on the situation.

Craig Hope shares injury update on Harvey Barnes

Hope has taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share what he has heard about the injury that Barnes is suffering from.

He wrote: “Barnes first felt the issue after coming on against Wolves last weekend, although the problem is thought to be very slight.”

Only a ‘slight’ injury’ for Newcastle United winger

So the issue emerged during the 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend. He came as a substitute during that game, replacing Alexander Isak in the 69th minute.

While it is a shame to lose Barnes to injury, it is at least encouraging that the issue is only considered ‘slight’. Then again, we have heard that on plenty of occasions this season, only for the player to endure a lengthy layoff.

Hopefully that is not the case with Barnes, as we have a massive game this weekend. We face Manchester City in the quarter final of the FA Cup.

The England international will be desperate to be fit, and it is even more important that he is available after Toon teammate Anthony Gordon limped off during the first half of Monday night’s game against Chelsea.
