It would be fair to say that Newcastle United did not enjoy their trip to Chelsea on Monday night.
Newcastle fell to a 3-2 defeat in west London on a night where Eddie Howe’s side never really got going.
While Alexander Isak’s strike gave them hope after they fell behind, goals from Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk condemned them to yet another defeat on the road.
Jacob Murphy’s late goal, meanwhile, was something to shout about but Newcastle had already given themselves far too much to do.
That’s now only two wins from seven games, leaving them with a mountain to climb to get back into the European spots come the end of the season.
Howe’s side certainly didn’t start well at Chelsea in the Premier League with Nicolas Jackson netting within the opening six minutes.
Anthony Gordon lasted just over half an hour at Stamford Bridge on a disappointing day.
Anthony Gordon: Why Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall were unhappy with Newcastle star
Indeed, according to journalist Chris Waugh of The Athletic, Howe and assistant coach Jason Tindall were seen remonstrating with Gordon even before Chelsea scored their opener.
He posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Tindall & Howe have been remonstrating with Gordon for a while & seemingly it is because he has not been providing Burn with the cover they want.”
Gordon’s lack, or perhaps inability, when it came to tracking back was even noted by pundit Gary Neville on Sky Sports, who said: “Gusto is running off Gordon at will. He’s decided he’s not going to go and follow the right-back.”

Anthony Gordon: A tough one to take for Newcastle star
It would be foolish to judge the 23-year-old on one performance considering just how good he’s been this season.
Billed as one of the standout players in the Premier League thus far, an already difficult season would surely have been much worse without him.
Still, that was a poor night on which to fluff your lines. Having openly admitted he was keen to get into the England squad for Euro 2024, enduring a difficult evening in front of the watching Gareth Southgate at Stamford Bridge only compounded matters.
Gordon has of course had much better games as a Newcastle player and few would doubt him coming back into form. Monday night was not one to remember.
