Newcastle United had a great chance to beat an average Chelsea side on Monday night, but they completely blew it.

The Magpies were beaten 3-2 at Stamford Bridge, as Cole Palmer bagged a goal and an assist to condemn Eddie Howe‘s side to a defeat.

There was a lot of confidence from the Toon Army heading into this game, despite Kieran Trippier being absent due to injury. He was also joined by Harvey Barnes, who missed the match in West London due to a hamstring problem.

But Newcastle should have had enough to get something out of the game against Chelsea. However, they fell to a 12th defeat of the season and missed the chance to jump up to seventh in the Premier League.

It was a really disappointing performance from the Magpies, while Chelsea were deserving winners.

Alan Shearer says Chelsea deserved to win against Newcastle

That is the view of Toon legend Alan Shearer, who has provided his instant reaction to the game on his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

After the full time whistle, he wrote: “Chelsea, who are average at best deserved to win tonight. Palmer MOTM by a mile.”

Newcastle were really disappointing vs Chelsea

Alan Shearer is spot on. This is not a great Chelsea side, yet they were more than worthy of victory on Monday night. Cole Palmer ran the show, grabbing a goal and an assist.

From a Newcastle perspective, it was such a disappointing night. We scored two great goals through Alexander Isak and Jacob Murphy, but there is not much pride in the performance.

There were poor displays all over the pitch, most notably in defence. Sven Botman had another shocking game and continues to struggle after his knee injury, while Martin Dubravka was yet again unconvincing in between the sticks.

There is obviously no chance Newcastle are going to qualify for the Champions League, but at least the Europa League was still a possibility heading into the game against Chelsea. However, even that feels like a long shot now, with Howe’s side seven points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.

So much more was expected from Newcastle on Monday night, and they absolutely did not deliver.
