Newcastle United fans have not seen much of Trevan Sanusi in 2025.

The 18-year-old dazzled supporters during pre-season, with Eddie Howe giving Trevan Sanusi various opportunities to play with the first-team.

He grabbed those opportunities, before going on to make his senior Newcastle United debut in the FA Cup third round win over Bromley. After that game, Howe told Sanusi to work on his end product, as the teenager continues to refine his game.

Since then, he has not had many chances to prove himself to the manager. He sustained a back problem in January, before Sanusi suffered another injury setback in March.

An ankle problem has kept the attacker out of action, but now he has returned.

Trevan Sanusi returns for Newcastle United

Sanusi made a late substitute appearance for the Newcastle United Under-21s last Friday night, as they lost to Arsenal in a Premier League 2 playoff.

While it was disappointing to lose, it was great to see Sanusi back in action.

He stepped up his recovery even further on Wednesday night, starting for the Newcastle United Under-18s against Leeds United. Sanusi played just shy of an hour as the young Magpies drew 3-3.

It was his first start at any age level since January 16th.

Eddie Howe set for decision over Newcastle United wonderkid

As the summer looms, Howe has a decision to make.

Sanusi was part of the Newcastle United first-team last summer. He travelled to Germany and Japan with the Magpies, while he featured in friendlies at St James’ Park.

Not only did he feature – he impressed too.

Newcastle United fans are excited to see what the future holds for him. Sanusi is a unique talent in the eyes of Newcastle staff, and they will be eager for him to continue developing.

But Howe must decide whether that development happens on Tyneside or out loan.

Last summer, Howe said Sanusi was too young to be loaned out. It will be interesting to see whether or not that stance has changed 12 months later.
