Newcastle United think they have a very ‘unique’ 17-year-old in their ranks

In the era of PSR, Newcastle United need more stars to emerge from their academy.

That helped the Magpies this summer, with Elliot Anderson joining Nottingham Forest for £35million. That deal ensured Newcastle United complied with PSR, amid a period of financial turmoil at St James’ Park.

But Newcastle do not need more academy talents emerging so that they can sell then off. The goal will be for these young players to develop into senior stars and negate the need for mega money signings.

That will be up to Paul Mitchell, who will be tasked with bringing young players to the club. Vakhtang Salia is set to join Newcastle from Dinamo Tbilisi, and Toon officials will hope that the 17-year-old attacker achieves his potential on Tyneside.

There are also youngsters already at the club who will have first-team ambitions, with the most exciting being Trevan Sanusi.

Trevan Sanusi is the next big thing at Newcastle United

With Lewis Miley now established as a senior player at St James’ Park, Sanusi has taken his place as the next big thing on Tyneside.

Sanusi impressed Newcastle United fans during pre-season, with Eddie Howe giving the 17-year-old multiple chances to express himself as part of the first-team.

The teenager is yet to make his competitive debut for the Magpies, but it already feels inevitable that he will become a Premier League player in the future.

How Newcastle feel internally about Trevan Sanusi

According to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, Newcastle United staff have very high hopes for Trevan Sanusi.

In a Q&A for the Athletic, Waugh has noted that Sanusi is the most exciting player in Newcastle United’s academy right now.

Waugh has written that people at Newcastle believe he has ‘unique attacking capabilities’, with Sanusi being ‘fast-tracked into the first-team set-up’ and getting the chance to train with the rest of the Magpies’ senior stars.

While Sanusi has not been in any of Newcastle’s matchday squads since the 2024/25 season kicked off, he has been spotted training with the first-team on occasions.

Newcastle will have a plan to ensure Sanusi reaches his potential

Sanusi was the breakout star of Newcastle’s pre-season preparations. Toon fans were blown away by his skill and trickery, resulting in a clamour to see more of him.

However, it will take time for Sanusi to be Premier League ready. He is still very much a work in progress, but Newcastle will have a plan in place to ensure he reaches his potential.

Eddie Howe has told Sanusi that he needs to do more in the final third, which was evident during his pre-season appearances. To reach that elite level, Sanusi will need to be regularly contributing goals and assists.

But that is not a major concern. He is still only 17-years-old. That decisiveness should come as he grows and matures as a player.

While Sanusi has been likened to Allan Saint-Maximin, he will be keen to create his own legacy on Tyneside, and he is a player who Newcastle United rightly have high hopes for.
