One of Newcastle United’s longest serving players is now set to stay at St James’ Park beyond this season.
The Magpies have a lot of major contract decisions to make in the coming months, with the likes of Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie coming towards the end of their current deals.
That was also the case for Jamaal Lascelles, who is the captain of Newcastle United. He has been a Toon player since 2014, and has had the armband since 2016.
His contract was set to expire this summer, while he was also linked with a move away from St James’ Park during the January transfer window.
But Newcastle fended off interest from Turkey, and it has now been confirmed by Eddie Howe that he will not be leaving on a free at the end of the season.
Eddie Howe confirms Jamaal Lascelles contract extension
That is because Howe has confirmed that the club have triggered a one-year extension, meaning Lascelles’ contract now runs until 2025.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has taken to X after Howe’s press conference, confirming the news that Lascelles has extended his stay at St James’ Park.

Good decision to keep Jamaal Lascelles at Newcastle United
It is a smart decision to keep Lascelles. The 30-year-old is an important figure at the club, and has been an incredible leader for multiple years.
While he is no longer a regular starter on Tyneside, he can still be a great squad player. We saw that earlier this season when he came in for Sven Botman during his injury.
There were plenty of reservations surrounding Lascelles playing, but he was outstanding. The 30-year-old looked better than ever in black and white, and played a key role in one of Newcastle’s most famous wins ever – the 4-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
While Newcastle do need to trim their squad and move some players on, Lascelles is certainly worth keeping. He is a solid backup option, and we have seen this season exactly why you need to have strong options in reserve.
