It looks like Newcastle United’s vice captain Kieran Trippier is staying at St James’ Park, and it seems like that will also be the case for the actual skipper.

Bayern Munich’s interest in Trippier appears to have come to an end, at a time when a plethora of Newcastle players are being linked with moves away from Tyneside.

The captain Jamaal Lascelles falls into that category, with the 30-year-old rumoured to be a target for Turkish club Besiktas. It was even reported that the defender has asked Newcastle to leave, as he heads into the final few months of his Toon contract.

With his deal expiring this summer, it would make sense for Lascelles to secure a permanent transfer now, but the Chronicle have massively played down suggestions from Turkey that he is eager to leave during the January transfer window.

Jamaal Lascelles looking to stay at Newcastle United

According to the Chronicle, Lascelles is not looking for Newcastle to sell him during what is left of the January transfer window. They state that he would actually like to extend his contract at St James’ Park, with Lascelles seemingly in no mood to call time on his Toon career.

The centre-back signed for Newcastle United from Nottingham Forest in August 2014, and made his debut for the club a year later. By 2016 he was captain, and the armband has belonged to him ever since.

Lascelles has had to lend it to Trippier a lot since Eddie Howe became manager, with the 30-year-old spending a lot of time on the bench. But he was drafted back into the starting XI earlier this season when Sven Botman was injured, and he was absolutely outstanding.

Lascelles was involved in big wins over Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Arsenal, with Eddie Howe describing the defender’s performances as ‘excellent‘.

He is now back on the bench, but it would be a mistake to let him go. He is a great option to have in reserve, and has proven this season that he can and will be reliable when called upon.

That is why talk of a move to Besiktas was so concerning, but the Chronicle have rubbished claims that a January exit is on the cards.
