Eddie Howe believes Newcastle have lost a ‘very talented’ player this month

Newcastle United have endured a pretty quiet January transfer window.

With FFP problems reportedly frustrating those behind the scenes, Newcastle have not been able to bring any players in.

Instead, the stories have largely centred around potential departures.

While Kieran Trippier looks set to stay at St James’ Park along with Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson is being tipped to move to a Premier League giant.

One departure, albeit perhaps not one that grabs the headlines quite so much, was Javier Manquillo.

The defender joined former Toon boss Rafa Benitez at Celta Vigo earlier this month, bringing an end to his time on Tyneside.

Now, Eddie Howe shared his verdict.

Javier Manquillo: Eddie Howe delivers transfer verdict

Despite having barely featured under Howe even before his injury this season, the Newcastle manager was full of praise for the Spaniard.

He confirmed the club were “sad to see” Manquillo depart, describing the 29-year-old as “very talented.”

Speaking to reporters (via The Chronicle): “I’m not sure it gives us much wiggle room in the transfer market but very sad to see him go.

“He’s been a loyal servant and seen a lot in his years here. He’s been very supportive of the players as he has been injured this year. Very talented player and sad to see him go. Wish him well for the future.”

Javier Manquillo: Newcastle will always have Leeds moment

While not the most headline-grabbing full-back in the era of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Reece James, Manquillo played a huge part in keeping Newcastle in the division.

It was his run away at Leeds back in January 2022 that teed up Jonjo Shelvey to score a dramatic free-kick while Howe’s side were pulling away from the relegation scrap.

Though there may have been players in that run who did the business more regularly, Manquillo’s contribution cannot be forgotten.
