It has been a fantastic few weeks for Dan Burn.

A boyhood Newcastle United fan, the 31-year-old scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League in what was surely a hugely emotional moment for him and his family.

Burn, a £13m signing from Brighton in January 2022, continues to play a big role under Eddie Howe even despite there being competition for the left-back berth from the likes of Lewis Hall and Matt Targett.

Now, the player has been rewarded for his performances by signing a contract extension, keeping him at St James’ Park until 2025.

Upon penning the deal, Burn shared some interesting insight.

Indeed, the defender is of the belief his new contract is a huge achievement, more so than initially signing for the club in the first place.

Rather than just be a stop-gap signing, Burn has proven himself and is trusted enough to be handed terms for at least another two years.

“It means everything to me to play for this club and to sign a new contract. I said when I signed that I didn’t want this to be just a ‘stop-gap’ signing to keep us up – I wanted to be here for a long time,” he told the club’s official website.

“So personally it feels even more of an achievement signing this one than it was actually signing here in the first place. I’m delighted and looking forward to the next couple of seasons.”

Burn keeps proving people wrong and still has a big part to play

The likes of Simon Jordan have previously suggested the club would look to move on from Burn, but there he remains.

Also able to operate in central defence, there’s little reason to suggest Burn won’t at least see out his contract. Even if he needs to come away from the left-back spot in his advancing years, being able to fill in centrally is a huge positive for Howe.
