Newcastle United did it. They beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. And they did it with Dan Burn scoring a goal.

The 31-year-old does not score often for Newcastle, but it usually matters when he does. And that was certainly the case on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

Burn scored the Magpies’ second goal of the evening, showing incredible desire to get on the end of Bruno Guimaraes’ delicate cross.

The giant rose highest, with Gianluigi Donnarumma unable to stop the ball from crossing the line.

There was a lengthy VAR check that made it an agonising wait for Burn, before he finally found out that he had made it Newcastle United 2 Paris Saint-Germain 0 in the Champions League.

Even without his goal, it was a great performance from Burn. He won everything in the air, as he should, while he had to be so alert to handle Ousmane Dembele.

But the Frenchman rarely got the better of him. He certainly did not run rings round Burn as had been feared by fans before kickoff.

The Blyth-born defender, the real Angel Of The North, was excellent on Wednesday night, and even received praise from the French media for his performance.

L’Equipe impressed with Dan Burn against PSG

French outlet L’Equipe have provided their player ratings from the game. They believed that Bruno Guimaraes was Newcastle’s best player, giving him a score of 8/10.

But they were also impressed with Burn, who received a six.

On Burn, L’Equipe wrote: “If all the defenders of the English club were solid, the left side Dan Burn (6) showed concentration and constant vice in marking Dembele whose speed he suspected would make him suffer. On arrival, it was Burn who hurt PSG by scoring with a header just before the break.”

As L’Equipe allude to, all the talk before the game was about the problems that Burn could have up against PSG’s attackers. But in the end, it was him who was causing the problems.

The local lad must be absolutely bursting with pride after what happened. It was emotional when he scored in the Carabao Cup quarter final earlier this year, but this is on a different level. This is the Champions League. This is PSG.

But this was Newcastle’s night. It was Burn’s night.
