Simon Jordan names the two Newcastle regulars Howe might soon be selling

At some point, Newcastle United will have to move on from many of the players who have taken the club so far.

That, frankly, is the nature of trying to compete at the top level on a yearly basis.

Indeed, it is not so much a reflection on the players themselves, more of the ambition at Newcastle.

Amanda Staveley has already talked of the desire to see the club challenge for major honours on a consistent basis and, to do that, constant strides forward must be made.

To that end, there will have to be a turnover of playing staff at some point.

Still, suggestions from Simon Jordan feel somewhat early.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday, the former Crystal Palace owner offered up two names who might fall victim to such ruthlessness.

Allan Saint-Maximin and Dan Burn were suggested to be under pressure to keep their places long-term.

“There’s certain players that have got Newcastle into a position that are going to be surplus to requirements,” he said at 11.46am.

“They might be the Dan Burn’s of the world, they might be the Saint-Maximin’s of the world that have been heroes in one guise but are now beginning to look like the team is moving on without them.”

Perhaps not as crazy as it sounds

While the Saint-Maximin suggestion makes sense given how little he has played under Howe and following his recent cryptic Instagram message, the Burn shout jars a little.

The £13m signing has proven a key part of one of the best defences in Europe, after all.

Still, perhaps it’s not as crazy as it sounds.

Kieran Tierney is believed to be a target and part of that chase is supposedly to move Burn into a central position and compete with Sven Botman and Fabian Schar.

While it’s hard to imagine the 31-year-old sold, particularly after extending his contract, it’s hardly out of the question that he might lose his regular starting place.
