The reason Dan Burn no longer features in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts

Newcastle United players continue to be overlooked by Gareth Southgate at England.

Though Kieran Trippier remains a key part of the England set-up and Callum Wilson’s injury may have played a part in his recent omission from the current squad, there are a number of other Newcastle stars who cannot get a look in.

Nick Pope wasn’t selected despite some excellent performances in the Champions League, admittedly after a difficult start to the season. Sean Longstaff is another, along with the in-form Anthony Gordon.

Then there’s Dan Burn.

The defender hailed as “superb” by Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe formed part of what was statistically the joint-best backline in the Premier League last season but remains without even a call-up for the Three Lions.

Now, some added insight has emerged.

Why Dan Burn is no longer in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts

Indeed, according to The Athletic, Burn actually featured in Southgate’s thoughts before last winter’s World Cup as a central defender.

Still, they also suggest that his most frequently played position for Newcastle being at left-back has since harmed his chances.

England’s loss is Newcastle’s gain

It would be fantastic to see Burn rewarded for his brilliant performances at club level with an international call-up, particularly after the journey he’s been on through the lower leagues.

Still, from a Newcastle-centric point of view, it at least keeps him fresh for club competition.

At 31 and already playing in three competitions even before the FA Cup starts, the idea of adding yet more game time and training sessions to his workload is hardly ideal. Though Longstaff is younger of course, the same argument could be made for him too.

That may be a selfish viewpoint but Burn is so important at left-back that Newcastle can ill-afford to lose him.

England’s loss could indeed be Newcastle’s gain.
