Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has poked fun at John McGinn after the Magpies beat Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
It was a massive win for Newcastle at Villa Park, as they triumphed 3-1 over Aston Villa to pick up just their second away win in the Premier League this season. And they also became the first side to beat Villa on their own turf in the league since February 2023.
Eddie Howe‘s side looked back to their best, as he got the tactical edge over Unai Emery. Newcastle have now done the double over Villa, and Toon forward Callum Wilson has taken the chance to enjoy some banter at the expense of Villa captain John McGinn.
Why Callum Wilson and John McGinn have been exchanging jokes
One of Newcastle’s worst performances last season came at Villa Park, when Howe’s side lost 3-0 back in April.
Before that game, Wilson was in a confident mood. He said on the Footballer’s Football podcast: “Aston Villa are on fire? Let them know the fire brigade are in town… it looks like we will have to put the fire out.”
Of course, Newcastle were not the fire brigade, and instead they were blown away by a rampant Villa side.
Afterwards, John McGinn took aim at Wilson, aiming a joke in the direction of Newcastle’s number nine.
He said: “Actually, I didn’t notice that but like a lot of emergency services at the minute, the fire brigade must have been on strike…”
It was all in good fun, and now Wilson has used Tuesday night’s victory as a chance to get one over on the Scotland international.

“This time the fire brigade was in town big man!” he said on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast.
“It was a good result. If you looked at the game on paper with their home form which was ridiculous and our away form, which was terrible, there was and should have only been one outcome.
“But on the night we played some fantastic football, the boys were brave, and we didn’t just settle for the one or two goals. We kept going for more and we had to weather the storm towards the end of the game but that was always to be expected at such a good place to play. So three points closer to the mix!”
Newcastle really were exceptional on Tuesday night. They nullified Aston Villa, who are normally so strong at home. But Newcastle stopped them playing, and it gave the Magpies a platform to pick up a huge three points.
It could be a season-defining victory for Newcastle, as they look to get their campaign back on track and challenge for Europe. They have been going through a difficult spell, but this could be the turning point.
Now Newcastle suddenly have some favourable fixtures, and they could soon be in contention to challenge for the Champions League again if results go their way.
