John McGinn fires back at Callum Wilson after Villa’s win over Newcastle

Newcastle United were second best in every area of the pitch on Saturday as Aston Villa ran riot over a tired-looking Newcastle side, but it wasn’t just on the pitch where Villa picked up a win.

Newcastle striker, Callum Wilson set himself up for a fall on his BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast last week when he jokingly said: “Looks like we’re going to have to put the fire out. Someone call the fire brigade!”

The £20million signing immediately backed down from his cocky claims by giving Villa the credit they deserved adding: “We’ve won the last five. On form it’s a good fixture, they’ll have extra motivation as we beat them 4-0 at home. It’s going to be a game where they want to get their own back in front of the fans. It’s going to be a difficult match.”

John McGinn had the perfect response for Callum Wilson

Speaking after the game, Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn addressed Wilson’s comments, telling the Express and Star: “Actually, I didn’t notice that but like a lot of emergency services at the minute, the fire brigade must have been on strike.”

Credit where it’s due, McGinn’s had Wilson on toast here, another L for the Geordies after a difficult weekend.

You have to laugh or you’ll cry. It has been two days and I’m still not over that performance. I know it’s just one game, and if we want to find a positive, we still win 4-3 on aggregate, but that was the worst I’ve ever seen us play under Eddie Howe.

Newcastle have a week to get their heads right for Tottenham

There’s a lot of work to do at Benton this week to get us back up to speed. So many players are starting to look tapped out, a huge indicator of the lack of squad depth.

If we’re going to be competing in Europe next season we definitely need several more players through the door to avoid this kind of burnout.

Tottenham at home on Sunday is going to be another big test and will have a huge bearing on Newcastle’s Champions League qualification bid, but I back us to see them off. The St James’ Park crowd will see the boys over the line if they start to look leggy again.
