Callum Wilson improved a particular aspect of his game in pre-season

Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson admitted that he worked on a particular area of his game in pre-season. The work he put in during the summer certainly paid off.

The forward told co-host Michail Antonio of the ‘Footballer’s Football Podcast‘ that he had looked to improve his heading. Despite being 30-years old, Wilson believes he constantly needs to work on his game to prevent him from getting rusty.

His first three goals for Newcastle this season were headers. Had he not sustained an injury in December, he may have even more. He currently has six Premier League goals this season.

“It was more the timing of my jumps and the movement before the header that I needed to work on,” Wilson said.

“I was with the coaches pre-season and before games trying to identify weaknesses of teams like you do. For me, it was all about trying to add more headers to my game.

“Just literally just throwing the ball up and getting my timing. All of a sudden I was getting goals with my head.”

Wilson’s desire to constantly improve will make some Newcastle fans love him even more

Since his arrival back in the summer of 2020, Wilson has been a great signing. He’s been an essential provider of goals for the Magpies. Clearly what’s been a big part of that is his professionalism and desire to improve his game.

His return to first-team football will be highly anticipated. Hopefully, at the end of April or the start of May, we will see Wilson back in the Newcastle starting XI.

Newcastle have had a strong 2022 without him, and his return to the squad will only make them stronger. They went on a nine-game unbeaten run this calendar year and have made St James’ Park a fortress.

Following this weekend’s game against Norwich City, the Magpies have a couple of hard games ahead of them. They’ll take on Manchester City away and Liverpool at home.

Should the forward be back in some capacity for those two tough challenges, it will provide a real boost. Furthermore, it’ll take the pressure off Chris Wood.

The New Zealand international has found it hard to consistently find that net. So the return of Wilson will mean the Toon are less reliant on him up-front.
